How Much Does a Divorce Cost?

How much does a divorce cost?

It’s the question we get the most often before our prospective clients come to see us, and it’s the question that is the most difficult to answer.

At Held Law Firm, a divorce could cost as little as $1,500, or, if we go all the way through a trial, it could cost $50,000 or more. It could take as little as 90 days or as long as years. It all depends on your goals, how those goals are supported by the facts of the case and the law, whether you and your X can agree on anything, how angry people are, and what Judge we are in front of. Your initial case assessment is used to discuss these details and provide you with as accurate an assessment as possible of what your case will cost.

The average cost – including the easy divorces and difficult divorces, at Held Law Firm, is $8,000. The average length of time all of our divorces are pending – including the agreeable ones and the fully contested ones – is 11 months.  That puts our costs and our time at substantially less than all other divorces in Knox County and the surrounding counties.

How do we do it?

1. Unlike other family lawyers, we are a true Law Firm.

This means that we work as a team. At Held Law Firm, you will have a dedicated staff person setting hearings, mediations, appointments and depositions, so nothing slips through the cracks, and there are no unnecessary delays. You will have a paralegal, whose entire job is to collect information, help you answer discovery questions, issue subpoenas, and then organize the information to ensure that it is complete and easy to understand. You will have two attorneys (not one) dedicated to your case, so that your case is almost never held up over our inability to be available, and so that someone is always available to answer your questions, almost always that same day. We retain at least two law clerks to research questions of law in a fast, effective, up-to-date and affordable manner. When you hire Held Law Firm, you don’t just hire a lawyer, you hire a full legal team.

2. We keep our eyes on the prize.

Yes, this is a stressful time, but in our experience, most people are far happier after a divorce than before. We move quickly from assessing your current circumstances to envisioning a better life. Every strategic decision we make is governed by that vision. We will counsel you, repeatedly, not to react to the drama drummed up by an angry, bitter X, or the bombastic threats of an easily threatened, unprepared opposing counsel. Our mantra is to work our file, do our job, and stay focused. That’s how we win cases and how we minimize costs and stress.

3. We put you first.

We practice law because we love the law, and we love our clients. Family law is transformative. We love witnessing that transformation, and it is incredibly rewarding to walk that path with you.

We look forward to meeting you to assess your case, and to plan for your future.
