Custody Arrangements: What Is 2-2-3?

There are many different possible custody arrangements. Which arrangement you settle on is dependent on the best interest of the child. When it comes to 50/50 custody, deciding how to split that time can be a painstaking process.

One of the most common arrangements is “2-2-3.” In a 2-2-3 setting, one parent has the same two days of the workweek, then the other parent has the same two days of the workweek. On weekends, the parents alternate from week to week. So, for example, one parent might have Mondays and Tuesdays.  The other might have Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Then they take turns with Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

This is the arrangement we most commonly recommend for parents that want a true 50/50 schedule, due to the following benefits:

  1. You never go more than 5 days without seeing your child.
  2. It’s easier to schedule stuff on your time if you know you’ll always have that day of the week – there’s no working with the other parent to get them to their Monday night dance class for example because you always have them Monday nights.
  3.  It’s easier on kids to plan their lives as they grow up.  For example, if they want to ride the bus home with their best friend, they know to ask Mom if it’s on a Monday and Dad if it’s on a Wednesday. The structure means that both you and your child are able to avoid confusion and conflict.
  4. It keeps the weekends from being broken up with a transition between households.
  5. It keeps both parents equally involved in activities.
