A Memphis native, Vivian Wright first dreamed about becoming an attorney at age 9, inspired by her parents and the community that raised her. “When I hear the quote ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ I have to smile,” Vivian laughs, “My “village” consisted of two hard-working and devoted parents, supported by my grandparents, a host of aunts and uncles, and an enormous community of neighbors. All my accomplishments, failures, joy, and sadness was shared with my village.” “Slacking off was not an option,” she jokes, “too many eyes and ears.” “But seriously, it was great, and it gave me a heightened sense of the value of a community and the desire to serve.”
Vivian joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and she became involved in everything from volunteering at local soup kitchens and food pantries to aiding in the care of children whose lives are impacted by HIV/AIDS. Eventually, her experience as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) led her to family law.
Vivian attended Christian Brothers University in Memphis, then the University of Tennessee College of Law, where she was an inaugural member of the Child Welfare and Adoption law Moot Court Team. She also clerked with Legal Aid of East Tennessee, where she worked with the Saturday Bar Legal Clinic, the Community Mediation Center, and the Volunteer Income Tax Association. Vivian’s commitment was eventually recognized with an Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award.
After graduation, Vivian cut her teeth as a solo practitioner specializing in juvenile law, before she joined Held Law Firm. Here, Vivian’s practice has expanded to include adoptions, divorces, nontraditional family law, and estate planning.
“I wouldn’t be where I am now if it was not for the support of my village, and I want to give back all that it gave me. Through my membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I make a difference on a personal level, but at Held Law Firm I am also able to make a difference on a professional level. It is my hope that our commitment to our clients and our willingness to fight for their causes establishes our firm as a part of the “village.”
